Focus on LAW

James A. Crumlin, Jr. has extensive experience in the areas of labor and employment law, corporate business litigation, entertainment disputes and small business representation.

Mr. Crumlin routinely advises management on issues arising from the employment relationship. Mr. Crumlin conducts in-house management training sessions for companies on the issues of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Equal Employment Opportunity Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Tennessee Human Rights Act and other federal and state laws that affect employers. He has practiced before Tennessee trial courts throughout the State, Federal District Courts in Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He also represents a variety of companies and individuals in business disputes.

Mr. Crumlin is very active in the Nashville community, and was recently selected for Leadership Nashville, as a member of the 2009-2010 class. He is a graduate of the 41st Young Leaders Council Class and also served two three-years term on that organization’s Board of Directors and as the Young Leaders Council’s intern on the board of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center Management Corporation.  Mr. Crumlin is also the recipient of the 2007 Nashville Emerging Leaders Award for Law, which was awarded at an Inaugural Ceremony held by the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and the 20/20 Leadership Alliance to professionals under 40 years of age who have excelled at their profession while making a difference in the Nashville community.  In 2009, Mr. Crumlin was selected for the Nashville Business Journal's "Best of the Bar" by his peers in the Nashville legal community. 

Currently, Mr. Crumlin serves as President of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee board and Chair of the Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center, Inc., board. He also serves on the boards of several non-profit organizations in Nashville, including Kelly Miller Smith Center Against Abusive Behavior and The Tennessee Repertory Theater. He serves on the Vanderbilt University Law School National Alumni Board and the Advisory Board for the Meharry Medical College National Alumni Association. In addition, Mr. Crumlin is a member and Trustee of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he served on the Project 2000 committee that was charged with overseeing the construction of the church’s $17 million facility.

Mr. Crumlin is a member of the Nashville, Tennessee, American, and Napier-Looby Bar Associations. In 2010, he was elected a Fellow of the Tennessee Bar Foundation. He serves as a Hearing Committee Member of the Board of Professional Responsibility of the Supreme Court of the State of Tennessee. He was selected to the Tennessee Bar Association’s Leadership Law Class of 2006, and has served on the steering committee since then. He is a Barrister member in the Harry Phillips American Inn of Court.

A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Mr. Crumlin received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Vanderbilt University in 1994 and his Juris Doctor from Vanderbilt University Law School in 1997. From 1997-1998, he served as a judicial clerk to United States District Judge William J. Haynes, Jr., (former United States Magistrate Judge) for the Middle District of Tennessee.
