Paul Kruse will Lead Trademark Registration Workshop

Bone McAllester Norton’s trademark attorney, Paul W. Kruse, is scheduled to lead a trademark workshop for the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business Studio on Tuesday, Aug. 18. In this workshop, attendees will walk through the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s process for a trademark application with Paul and will leave with the application and an understanding of what to do next.

Alex Little Slated as Cybersecurity Training Speaker

Alex Little, Bone McAllester Norton attorney, is scheduled to present at the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s Cybersecurity Training series. The “road show” events take place on  May 6 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. and on May 7 in Jackson, Tenn. His session will address “Assessing Your Liability: Cybersecurity and the Law.”

Intellectual Property Spring Institute will Feature Paul Kruse

Bone McAllester Norton will Partner with Renasant Bank on Habitat for Humanity Home Build

Bone McAllester Norton and Renasant Bank have teamed up on a weekend build with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville in the Hallmark neighborhood in south Nashville. Construction on the home is slated to begin mid-April, and the two teams will work together on installation of siding and insulation, caulking of plates and panel joins and overall cleaning on Saturday, April 18, 2015. The home is for the Ongo family, who moved here from Ethiopia in 2009, and is seeking a quality, affordable home in a safe neighborhood for their two children.

Bone McAllester Norton will Host Draft Drone Regulations Meeting, March 17

Firm Seeks Input for Federal Aviation Administration Rules

Nashville, Tenn.—(March 10, 2015) Nashville-based law firm Bone McAllester Norton PLLC will host a meeting regarding draft regulations released by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS, or commonly, “drones”). The free meeting, open to the public, will be held the morning of Tuesday, March 17, 2015. Business owners and decision makers in all fields that might either use UAS or be impacted by their use are encouraged to attend.  There will be an opportunity to learn more about the proposed regulations and provide input on their development.

“The proposed UAS rules provide both challenges and opportunities for new and for well-established businesses,” said James Mackler, attorney and founder of Bone McAllester Norton’s UAS focus. “Our firm has a long history of guiding entrepreneurs through complicated regulations. We look forward to working with our clients to help them leverage the potential of this emerging technology.”

Mackler will be joined by Lt.Gen. James Mackler will Address UAS in Law Enforcement Webinar

Bone McAllester Norton attorney James E. Mackler is part of a panel discussion on the use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS or, more commonly, “drones”) in law enforcement. As a relatively new technology, law enforcement agencies are seeking to better understand which platforms and sensor payloads will best meet their needs. The webinar, “Aerial Assets: UAS in Law Enforcement,” will take place at 2 p.m. Central, Thursday, March 5. Healthcare Fraud and Introducing Misbranded Cancer Drugs into Interstate Commerce with Ed Yarbrough and Alex Little

Bone McAllester Norton attorneys Edward M. Yarbrough and Alex Little are slated as presenters at the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services’ (TALS) Winter Meeting. Their presentation, “Healthcare Fraud and Introducing Misbranded Cancer Drugs into Interstate Commerce” will review the case history of a federal criminal prosecution in East Tennessee. The defendants, an oncologist and his wife who served as the practice manager for his clinic, were indicted for multiple counts of healthcare fraud and introducing misbranded cancer drugs into interstate commerce.

In the presentation, Ed and Alex will discuss the initial investigation by the Food and Drug Administration agent and the Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, as well as the motion to suppress all evidence seized by the agents, other pretrial motions and the trial itself. They will address how they were able to have the convictions vacated and the cases remanded to trial court for dismissal with prejudice.

Ed and Alex are members of the firm’s Criminal Defense and Government Investigations practice. Ed has been a successful trial lawyer in Nashville for more than 40 years and is a former U.S. Attorney. Alex is a former federal prosecutor and served as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee.

NASHVILLE – Today, Nashville law firm Bone McAllester Norton PLLC hosted its 14th annual Fellowship Breakfast honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Honoring Yesterday, Securing Tomorrow: Dr. King’s Legacy 2015.

“We’re honored to have so many in our community come out this morning and celebrate with us the life and work of Dr. King,” said Charles W. Bone, founder and chairman of the law firm. “It’s important to remember and to embrace Dr. King’s message, especially at a time of recent tensions.”

This year’s event included a special tribute to the late John Seigenthaler, and more than 500 people were in attendance this morning. A panel discussion focused on how Dr. King’s message is relative to us today. Stacey Garrett, chair of the board of directors at Bone McAllester Norton, moderated the discussion.

Panelist Bishop Joseph W. Walker III referenced Nashville being called the “It City,” but he said, “There are some pockets of our city that have yet to feel the ‘it.’”

He continued, “It’s about giving people opportunities to transform.” He said we have to address it in multiple areas of economics, education and mentoring.

“Every generation has challenges,” said Kasar Abdulla, Director of Community Relations, Valor Collegiate Academy, “and it’s how we approach these challenges that matters.”

“It takes courage,” Kasar added.

The conversation concluded with thoughts and comments from those in the audience.

Also on the program were members of the top-ranked KIPP Academy Nashville Choir, who gave an inspiring performance during the breakfast.

KIPP Academy is a charter school, and the Nashville performance choir has garnered local, regional and national acclaim, regularly winning exemplary status at local and regional festivals and has twice been selected to highlight student performances at the annual KIPP School Summit Gala.

Bishop Joseph W. Walker III is pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Nashville and the International Presiding Bishop-Elect in the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship International.   Bishop Walker began his pastorate at Mt. Zion in 1992 with 175 members, and today the ministry has more than 29,000 members.  He is the author of nine books, the founder of the New Level Community Development Corporation and co-founder of the Drs. Joseph & Stephanie Walker Scholarship Fund.  In 2014, in the wake of the social unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, Bishop Walker founded Nashville Unites.  He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern University, a Master of Divinity degree from Vanderbilt University and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Princeton Theological Seminary.

Honorable Glenn Funk, District Attorney General of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County, was named 2014 ‘Man of the Year’ by The Tennessee Tribune newspaper for his work toward enhancing diversity in the District Attorney’s Office.  He serves on the board of directors of the YWCA of Nashville and Middle Tennessee, the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center Leadership Council, the Rochelle Center, Room in the Inn and the Child Advocacy Center.

Sara E. Green is a community organizer hailing from New Orleans and has been a devoted volunteer with Cayce United.  Last summer, she volunteered more than 300 hours in a 10-week period as co-coordinator of the Cayce United Summer Youth Organizing Institute. In addition to her work with Cayce United, Green is also pursuing her Masters degree in Community Development and Divinity.

Kasar Abdulla, Director of Community Relations, Valor Collegiate Academy, is a native of Kurdistan of Iraq. She has been a Nashvillian for more than 17 years. Since experiencing life in a refugee camp with her family, she has been a long-time social-justice educator, advocate and organizer.  Abdulla has received numerous honors for her community activism in Nashville. Most recently, President Obama named her a "Champion of Change" in September 2013 for her work on immigrant integration in Tennessee. Abdulla has been featured in Nashville Public Television's "Next Door Neighbor," the Nashville Scene's "The People Issue 2010" and Splashlife magazine's "30 Under 30: Civic Leaders."

NewsChannel 5 Talks to Stacey Garrett about SELMA Premiere

Nashville’s Annual Art Crawl CLE will Feature Will Cheek

Bone McAllester Norton attorney William T. Cheek III is slated as a presenter at the Arts & Business Council of Greater Nashville’s annual Art Crawl CLE, Thursday, Dec. 11. Three art galleries in downtown Nashville will host three different presentations, and attorneys are eligible for up to three hours of ethics CLE credits. Each stop will allow attendees to hear from an expert panel, view art and network.

Will is part of the “Lawyers on Arts Nonprofit Boards: Legal & Ethical Responsibilities” panel at The Rymer Gallery from 2:50 to 3:50 p.m. Other topics include “Understanding Nonprofit & Fiduciary Duties for Arts Board Members” and “Ethical Issues in Representing Pro Artist & Arts Nonprofit Clients.” A reception will follow the workshops.

Liquor Law Update with Will Cheek

Cheek III is presenting a course on liquor law for the Tennessee Bar Association tomorrow, December 2. “Liquor Law Update: WIGS, High Gravity Beer and Things that Make You Go Hmmmmm” will address the latest liquor laws and how they impact the liquor business in Tennessee. Specific topics will include wine in grocery stores (WIGS), the sale of high gravity beer and the ability wineries now have to open a retail store and a restaurant. This one-hour session takes place at noon via a webcast; one hour of CLE credit is available.

James Mackler will Speak on Unmanned Aerial Systems, Nov. 20

Bone McAllester Norton attorney James E. Mackler is slated to speak on a panel discussion Thursday, Nov. 20 about unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The exploration of current UAS technologies and their future will be outlined, including how FAA regulations are shaping up the way the units can be used. Attendees will have a chance to get hands-on experience with some of the vehicles while hearing from academic, government and private sector experts. Those interested in investing in UAS technologies, using UAS in educational settings or to get jobs done and hobbyists interested in learning more should attend.

Stephanie Taylor Discussed Independent Record Deals at the Americana Music Festival

Nashville entertainment attorney Stephanie R. Taylor, head of Bone McAllester Norton’s entertainment law practice, served as a panelist at last week’s Americana Music Festival’s conference.
