Tennessean Features 3 Bonelaw Clients

Three Bone McAllester Norton clients are prominently featured in this week’s “Music City Beat” section of The Tennessean. “Music to All Ears” covers the wide range of music genres now available to visitors in downtown Nashville, thanks to places like Acme Feed & Seed. The historic building at First and Broadway has been turned into a four-floor restaurant, bar and live music venue—and the music offerings vary from bluegrass and folk to Americana and “funky tonk,” the term Acme’s music booker termed.

Just a few blocks away, tucked away from the Lower Broadway scene on Lafayette Street, is the newly opened City Winery. This restaurant and venue is the fourth location for the brand, with other spots in New York City, Chicago and Napa, Calif. It pairs a wine-focused menu and an intimate space with a diverse concert calendar. Artists who have already played there include Macy Gray, Rodney Crowell and Dr. Ralph Stanley.

“Union Common Offers Opulent, Uncommon Dining Experience” reviews Bonelaw client Union Common, the boutique steakhouse that recently opened at the Broadway-Division split in Nashville. The menu boasts more than 20 small plates and several larger plates that feature seafood, steaks and pork chops. Everything served is meant to be shared, including bottles of wine, desserts, plates and sides.

Convenience Stores Not Likely to Sell Wine, Bonelaw Attorney Tells Reporter

Bone McAllester Norton Alcoholic Beverage Law attorney Olatayo O. Atanda spoke with a reporter from The Daily Times in Maryville, Tenn. this week, explaining that the new Wine in Grocery Stores law excludes most convenience stores. In order to qualify, participating businesses must have 1,200 square feet of retail space, and 20 percent of its taxable sales must be from the sale of food that qualifies for the state’s 5 percent sales tax.

“They are simply not big enough, and they don’t sell food items that are taxed at the rate that is discussed in the statute. They sell cigarettes and chips and Coke. Things like that don’t count. They don’t sell meat and vegetables and things of that nature,” he said.

Darek Bell of Corsair Distillery Talks Creativity with Native Magazine

In this month’s Native magazine, Bonelaw client Darek Bell of Corsair Distillery chalks up success to creativity. Bell explains: “Early on, one of our key concepts was that ‘creativity is free.’ Meaning that we cannot compete with the big boys for ad dollars or shelf space, but we can make all kinds of very unusual whiskeys they would never try. They are not willing to take risks that we are. We get a lot of free attention for making unusual products. If you make something creative, people will find you. Creativity is also important for brand authenticity.”

Bone McAllester Norton Gives Back to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee

Nashville Firm Donated Nearly 400 Pounds of Food Today as Part of “Hunger Action Month”

Nashville, Tenn.—(October 1, 2014) Nashville-based law firm Bone McAllester Norton PLLC donated nearly 400 pounds of food to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee today as part of “Hunger Action Month.” The firm, founded in 2002, has always had a strong commitment to serving the local community, and in September, attorneys and staff members joined together to donate canned goods and non-perishable food items for the cause.

“More than 110,000 of our neighbors, our friends and people we see every day here in Davidson County are affected by hunger,” said Sam J. McAllester III, vice chairman and member of Bone McAllester Norton. “Everyone at our firm is committed to giving back to our community, and this was something we were proud to participate in.”

On every Friday in September, attorneys and staff members were encouraged to donate food. Boxes were quickly filled, and the reward was an immediate sense of helping someone else in need.

Bone McAllester Norton supports a wide range of community programs and activities, striving to make its culture synonymous with good works for clients and the community. Joining together with the food bank to provide hope for others was something that made perfect sense, McAllester said.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee is one of the largest and most comprehensive of more than 200 food banks and food distribution centers nationwide. During the last fiscal year, the organization provided 23 million meals to hungry children, families and seniors throughout the mid-state. Its mission is to feed hungry people and work to solve hunger issues in the community.
