Larry W. Bridgesmith Leads Vanderbilt Law Students to International Victory

Scott Friedman and Alex McVeagh, both members of the Vanderbilt Law School Class of 2013, competed in the 8th Annual International Mediation Competition held by the International Chamber of Commerce February 8-13, 2013, in Paris, France. The team, coached by Bone McAllester Norton Larry W. Bridgesmith, placed fourth from among 65 teams from 31 nations and received the award for “Best Public Speakers.”

This marked the first time Vanderbilt’s law program entered the competition. Friedman and McVeagh were required to assume the roles of client and attorney engaged in commercial mediation. Vanderbilt was one of 11 U.S. law schools and one of four to advance past the preliminary rounds. Other U.S. schools included Cornell Law School, Cardozo Law School and St. John’s School of Law.

“Most teams consisted of four members rather than only two because of the time required to prepare for as many as two mediations per day, and most teams were accompanied by coaches who assisted with their preparation and written work," Bridgesmith said. “Alex and Scott performed exceptionally well.”

Stephen Zralek Quoted in The City Paper on Copyright Infringement Lawsuits

Bone McAllester Norton attorney Stephen Zralek was quoted in a January 29 article in Nashville’s The City Paper regarding copyright infringement lawsuits.

“It was only a matter of time before copyright trolls filed a bit-torrent lawsuit in Tennessee,” he said. “By law, the [Internet Service Providers] are required to reach out to the John Does and tell them they have 30 days to file a ‘motion to quash’ the subpoena or otherwise settle the lawsuit. If the individuals take no action, the ISPs will release their identities to the Plaintiff, after which the Plaintiff will amend the complaint to name the individual in the copyright infringement action — for all the world to see.”
